Vi­deoex Fes­ti­val 2024: Spe­cial: Views on Viet­nam

For a long time, it was impossible to work freely as an artist in Vietnam, partly due to censorship. This has now changed somewhat, and experimental film and video production has experienced a strong upswing in the last 20 years. The central theme of the works is the confrontation with the country's traumatic past, often involving (personal) stories of escape and exile. Nguyen Trinh Thi is considered a pioneer of independent cinema in Vietnam and one of the country's most renowned video artists. In 2009, she founded the Hanoi DOCLAB, an independent education and production center for documentary film and video art. For Videoex, she curates two programs that provide an insight into the young Vietnamese art and experimental film scene.
