Mar­tin Mc­Do­nag­h's Hang­men sur scè­ne en An­g­lais

Direction l’Angleterre des années 1960 avec Hangmen, une comédie noire où l’abolition de la peine de mort vient chambouler le quotidien d’un ancien bourreau. Humour grinçant, mystère et personnages hauts en couleur sont au rendez-vous.

Oldham, 1965. Harry Wade jouit d’une petite notoriété dans la ville : derrière le comptoir de son pub, il aime rappeler qu’il fut autrefois le deuxième bourreau le plus célèbre d’Angleterre. Mais lorsque la pendaison est abolie, cette réputation prend soudain une tout autre saveur.

Le jour de l’annonce, les habitués du pub se pressent autour de Harry, bientôt rejoints par un journaliste bien décidé à obtenir quelques confidences. L’arrivée d’un mystérieux inconnu aux intentions difficiles à cerner vient encore pimenter cette drôle de journée.

Écrite par Martin McDonagh, Hangmen manie l’humour noir et l’absurde pour mieux jouer avec les zones d’ombre de ses personnages. La pièce a remporté l’Olivier Award de la meilleure nouvelle pièce en 2016 avant de décrocher cinq nominations aux Tony Awards lors de son passage à Broadway.

À noter que le spectacle comporte un langage cru et des thématiques susceptibles de heurter certains spectateurs.

It’s 1965 in Oldham and Harry Wade is a local celebrity, holding sway among the loyal patrons of his pub by virtue of his status as the second most famous hangman in England. Harry is certainly the center of attention on the day hanging is abolished; attention from his sycophantic clientele, from an eager reporter, and from a mysterious stranger whose intentions are far from clear. 

Hangmen is a dark incisive comedy. Lauded as one of Martin McDonagh’s most hilarious outings, Hangmen won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2016 and earned five Tony Award nominations for its Broadway run. This play contains strong language and offensive themes that may not be suitable for all audiences.
