Zeal & Ardor catapults Basel musician Manuel Gagneux from the underground to the world stage. The mix of white black metal and spirituals from black slaves is his answer to a racist provocation on the Internet - and contains political tinder. The two filmmakers Olivier Joliat and Matthias Willi have been accompanying the Zeal & Ardor project from practically zero, since the entry in a forum in which the Basel musician Manuel Gagneux asked which genres had not yet been mixed had been. In his search for inspiration, he asked the infamous “4chan” platform. One user suggested black metal, another suggested “n*ger music”. Gagneux was shocked, but he couldn't get the idea out of his head: What if the slaves had rebelled against the religion of their oppressors back then? What if they had become Satanists rather than Christians? The music created in the Basler's basement goes viral, and the first festivals book performances. The film shows the band's unique rise, but also how fame can lead to musical idleness. The sudden leadership role scares the introverted artist. Can he manage to reshuffle the cards?
